Karen Louis is a lifelong storyteller, performer, and educator with decades of experience in theatre and the arts. From her early passion for vibrant, dynamic connections on stage, Karen found her calling in the magical world of theatre—creating believable, immersive stories through everything from set design to character portrayal. Her career has spanned New York City, Memphis, and Chicago, and now, as the Executive Director of Neighborhood Music School (NMS) in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, she brings that same commitment to storytelling and community-building through music. Under her leadership, NMS continues its 109-year legacy of providing affordable, high-quality music education to students of all ages in a historical Victorian house, a preserved piece of Los Angeles heritage.

Karen’s work at NMS is rooted in the belief that storytelling and artistic expression are essential skills that empower individuals and communities. Her team of 24 talented teaching artists nurtures students aged 4 to 84, many from families who have been part of NMS for generations. Through her passion and dedication, Karen continues to weave art, history, and humanity into the rich, multicultural fabric of Boyle Heights and beyond.

Dress Code

The City Club maintains a dress code.

Attire can certainly elevate or diminish the experience of others. They consider ball caps or beanies, tank tops, flip flops, distressed denim, shorts, team athletic attire, and t-shirts with no jacket as too casual for City Club LA. Their staff takes pride in their appearance, so they ask their members and their guests to respect their dress code at all times.
