Rotary International is an organization devoted to promoting peace, with Peace as one of its Areas of Focus.  Promoting peace can come in many forms including studying what peace is, exploring peace activities around the world, seeking needs for peacebuilding in our community, and actual engagement in peace building activities.

RI encourages every club to form an active Peace Committee. LA5 has a Peace Committee within our Service Division. It has been active over the past year in the club’s efforts to achieve better understanding about racial and cultural diversity, equity and inclusion.

We now want to broaden our peacebuilding scope and activities.

One goal is for LA5 to become a Rotary “peacebuilder” club, by joining the Rotary Action Group for Peace (RAGFP) network (www.rotaryactiongroupforpeace.org).

A peacebuilder club has peace action at the forefront of its agenda.  The RAGFP Mission is to serve as a resource to the Rotary community to engage, educate and empower the Rotary network to advance peacebuilding worldwide.

RAGFP supports the mission through three strategic focus areas:

  1. Raising the profile of peacebuilding in Rotary and beyond.
  2. Supporting Rotary Clubs and Districts’ peace action.
  3. Providing and facilitating Peace education to the Rotary network.

Another goal may be to create a culture of peace within our club and community. Within the Culture of Peace framework, peace is beyond an absence of conflict; it is an embrace of understanding, disarmament, sustainable economic and social development, democratic participation, gender equality, freedom of expression and respect for human rights.

With our exciting new Rotary year upon us, let’s engage together to identify the peacebuilding areas and activities we could pursue. What can we do to make a difference in our club and in our community? Our agenda is wide open as to our directions and efforts to build peace in and beyond LA5.

We are seeking members from LA5 to activate our Peace Committee.  Please email Lauren Schlau, Chair, to express your interest. [email protected]
